CANAMET INC introduces cutting edge blood pressure monitoring system Life saving device approved for sale in North America and Asia

TORONTO, October 7, 2004
CANAMET Inc., a start-up business spun out of the research arm of Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) is celebrating its first year in business with FDA approval of its first product, Piesometer Mk-1 automated ambulatory blood pressure monitoring system. In addition, the company has also announced new sales to distributors in Taiwan and China worth US $255,000.

Canamet's affordable medical technologies cancel out the noise that occur in noisy, ambulatory environments allowing personnel in ambulances, airplanes, battlefields, and remote communities instant access to the best medical advice available. The information is transmitted to medical facilities using any telephone line.

The technologies were developed by Canamet CEO Dr. Stergios Stergiopoulos while he was a Defence Scientist at Defence Research & Development Canada (DRDC) Toronto: the Canadian government holds the patent rights for these technologies. Canamet was created to commercialize the inventions. "We know the Defense Department has been very keen that we bring these products to market," said Dr. Stergiopoulos, "and we believe our hospitals and home care businesses will quickly see the value of our devices as well. "We are obviously pleased that the blood pressure monitor has been quickly picked up in markets in Taiwan and China. There is obviously room for tremendous growth there."

In his lab at the DRDC, Dr. Stergiopolous determined that the noise and vibrations could be virtually cancelled out using appropriately designed signal processing software. His concepts were refined, developed and patented as part of the DRDC Toronto military medicine research program. CANAMET is licensed to further develop and market them.
The Piesometer Mk-1 is a part of a suite of products developed by the Toronto-based company that provides a portable, easy-to-use kit which, as well as saving lives, can prevent or relieve health emergencies.

Other products in their development pipeline include:
  • Vital Signs 7 in 1 is a unique device which samples and reports signals from the body and external environment with Graphic User Interface and telemedicine functionality that allows for records to be transmitted over land or wireless phones or to be monitored over internet;

  • MC-CAT software which converts an old CT scanner into a state-of-the-art CT with the equivalent cardiac and 3D imaging capabilities as a multi-slice CT scanner at a fraction of the cost of a new machine;

  • Digital, portable 2D and 3D ultrasound systems that use aperture and adaptive beam-forming techniques to provide superior image resolution at minimal cost;

  • And, an intracranial ultrasound system that provides monitoring of brain density variations and the early diagnosis of stroke, brain haemorrhage, edema and head injuries.
